The Nimbin Writes! Literary Magazine was Nimbin's first magazine devoted to the publication and critical appraisal of local, and Australian creative writing. This Edition in A4 size, which was our first, was dedicated to the creative work of local Nimbin writers, of whom there are many. Stand-up poets perform regularly in the Nimbin Oasis Cafe and in the Nimbin Town Hall. And that's only the writers. There are also many artists, actors, musicians, designers and singers in Nimbin. Must be something in the air and water. This edition was produced in time for Nimbin's annual Mardi Grass festival, and presented a variety of poetry and prose.
The Nimbin Writes! Literary Magazine soon became Beyond the Rainbow showcasing the writers, not only of Nimbin but also Australia and countries all over the world. Beyond the Rainbow has the following objectives for creative writers: to support the excellence, diversity and distinctiveness of creative writers and writing, by valuing cultural diversity; to increase local community engagement with Australian literature and to encourage individuals to write; to win recognition of literature as a key element in our cultural, social and economic development; to encourage the vitality and viability of creative writing; to foster artistic innovation, experimentation, and creative writing in a rapidly changing and sometimes scary world.
